Spatiotemporal modelling of Greenland halibut maturation across the Northwest Atlantic

چکیده

Abstract Modelling life history trait variation at appropriate spatial and temporal scales is crucial for understanding population dynamics developing effective fisheries management strategies. However, most efforts to model traits ignore correlations make a priori assumptions about the structuring of populations, potentially clouding ability recognize true structure. Here we develop spatiotemporal maturation models Greenland halibut (Reinhardtius hippoglossoides) in Northwest Atlantic, species with large-scale movement patterns that can lead uncertainty regarding stock boundaries. Our analysis using data from three Fisheries Oceans Canada survey regions, Baffin Bay Davis Strait eastern Canadian Arctic, Newfoundland Labrador (NL), northern Gulf St. Lawrence (GSL), first such large scale. We also extend traditional binary maturity status multinomial one accounts seasonal changes maturation. Results show decreasing trend size across entire area. Spatial results provide new insight linking south (Northwest Atlantic Organization Subdivision 3Ps) GSL rather than NL stock. highlight parts area, where smaller waters both north south. Multinomial identify areas may be important reproductive development summer fall. analyses reveal constraints on correspond well-known positive association between fish length bottom depth. Broad-scale high resolution traits, as those performed here maturation, recurrent environmental or habitat characteristics might not otherwise evident stock- survey-specific basis.

Atlantic halibut - Hippoglossus hippoglossus

Distribution Th e Atlantic halibut is distributed throughout the northern part of the Atlantic Ocean and in parts of the Arctic Ocean (Fig.1) (1). Th e species is particularly abundant along the Norwegian coast, the Faroe Islands, Iceland, and southern Greenland. It may also be encountered in the North Sea and the western part of the Baltic Sea. Along the east coast of North America, the halibu...

Influence of North Atlantic Oscillation on anthropogenic transport recorded in northwest Greenland ice cores

[1] Nitrate records from six Greenland ice cores covering the period 1789 to 1995 show a significant correlation in concentration for averaging periods greater than 10 years, as well as an approximately 60% increase in average concentration during the last 75 years. Annual nitrate fluxes contain low-frequency trends driven primarily by changes in concentration, while higher-frequency variabilit...

Genetic Management of the Atlantic halibut (Hippoglossus hippoglossus)

ii Abstract The Atlantic halibut (Hippoglossus hippoglossus) was selected as a new aquaculture candidate towards diversification from salmonid culture. The species was chosen because of its high market value and perceived good growth in the cold waters of the target farming regions. Extensive and collaborative research efforts formed the basis for the culture of this benthic marine species. Bro...

Distribution of Thiols in the Northwest Atlantic Ocean Distribution of Thiols in the Northwest Atlantic Ocean

Thiol substances can form stable complexes with metals (especially copper and mercury) in the surface ocean that can impact cycling and bioavailability of those elements. In this study, I present seven concentration profiles of cysteine and glutathione, two low-molecular weight thiols, from the coastal northwest Atlantic Ocean and the Bermuda Atlantic Time Series (BATS) sampling site in the Sar...
